Coel de la vecia

The ancient cave

Under the Paganella, along the path that goes from the Terlago basin to the Sant’Antonio pass, there is a small cave, the Coel de la Vecia, used as a refuge by hunters and shepherds 8,000 years ago. Traces of these ancient frequentations were discovered around 2010 in the Pra’ Boral area, in Monte Terlago.

The site, accessible with a walk of about half an hour from the car park on the road to Monte Terlago, was identified by a researcher from the Science Museum. A representative of the museum explains that the Coel de la Vecia has already returned flint tools dating back to the Mesolithic, ceramic fragments from later periods and signs of animal shelters from more recent times. This stratified deposit suggests that the cave was used by hunters and shepherds in transhumance from prehistoric times to the Roman and late ancient periods.

This site could be linked to the findings of a camp dating back to 10-11 thousand years ago, discovered in the 1980s along the shores of Lake Terlago, which has already seen important archaeological investigations from the Bronze Age.
