THE DOLOMITES LIFT

The Lavis-Paganella cableway a bold engineering feat

In the 1950s, an ambitious idea took shape in the heart of Trentino: to connect the town of Lavis to the summit of Paganella with a spectacular cable car.

The construction of this cable car, nicknamed “the elevator of the Dolomites,” was a bold engineering feat. Tireless workers labored day and night, braving the steep slopes of the mountain, to create a work that would forever change the face of the territory.

In 1957, the cable car was finally inaugurated. The cabins began to soar into the sky, transporting tourists and locals towards breathtaking panoramas. The journey was an unforgettable experience, an emotion that was renewed with each ascent.

The Lavis-Paganella cable car became a symbol of modernity and progress, an attraction that drew visitors from all over the world. Its gradient, which in some sections exceeded 100%, made it unique of its kind.

Unfortunately, the cable car ceased its operations in 1979, but its memory is still alive in the hearts of those who loved it. The Paganella, with its wild beauty and endless views, continues to attract visitors from all over the world.

Fun Facts:

The cable car had a length of 3,887.84 meters and overcame a vertical drop of 1,885.76 meters.

The travel time was approximately 8 and a half minutes.

The cabins could carry up to 44 people.

The Lavis-Paganella cable car was an extraordinary work, an example of ingenuity and courage that left an indelible mark on the history of Trentino.
